Trainee – Yard Hand

The successful candidate will be working at the Airport Yard. They will undertake training in Supply Chain Operations and assist with the day to day running of the yard.

As a trainee you will be required to learn both on the job, and with your registered training organisation who will deliver your certificates/external training.

Some of the material you will cover in your qualification include;

  • ensure the safety of transport activities (Chain of Responsibility)
  • shift materials safely using manual handling methods
  • Secure cargo
  • Load and unload goods/cargo
  • Calculate mass, area and quantify dimensions
  • Administer a fatigue risk management system
  • Licence to operate a forklift truck

In the Yard / at Laird you will learn

  • How to identify hazards and work safely while learning how to use a variety of equipment and gain new skills.
  • Manual handling of all key tasks under the instruction of the SWMS and Work Instructions.
  • The skills you learn will include but are not limited to; loading and unloading of deliveries, dog-man crane operations as explained or instructed by your supervisor.
  • You will assist in insuring all pipes and other materials are stored, prepared for transport (according to orders) and loaded safely.
  • Complete quality inspections and or checking of works as well as maintaining quality records.
  • Manage rubbish and overall maintenance of yard including slashing of weeds and plant growth.
  • Learn to use and maintain the cranes, forklifts and other machinery/equipment on site, including doing minor mechanical fitting activities and other duties as required.


Certificate III Supply Chain Operations 

As part of this role, the successful candidate will be undertaking a Certificate III Supply Chain Operations across the first 12-24 months of employment. A traineeship is a great way to become qualified by learning on the job from those who know the ropes. You’ll earn money while you’re gaining your qualification and get real workplace experience.

To apply you should:

  • Be over 18 years of age.
  • Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
  • If you have worked on a construction or mining site previously this is an advantage this is not a requirement. However all staff will need to be aware of safety at all times as this busy yard can have multiple trucks being loaded/unloaded with forklifts and overhead crane lifts occurring at once – making this a high risk workplace.
  • It will also be an advantage if you have worked in a trucking or logistics kind of role so you will understand the “chain of responsibility” – This is not a requirement.
  • Holding a current Driver’s Licence is required (P plates accepted).
  • Able to reliably turn up to work each day either on public transport (Limited in area) or in/on own vehicle.
  • Enjoy working outdoors in all weathers and getting your hands dirty.
  • Be hard working, reliable, enthusiastic and will pay attention to detail.
  • Have a positive attitude and be team orientated.
  • Have a willingness to learn, and listen to more experienced workers in the team.
  • Hold or willing to obtain a white card.
  • Be willing to undergo regular drug and alcohol random tests. Understand there is zero tolerance for AOD at Laird to keep all staff safe in a high risk environment. 
  • Have completed Year 10 at school or equivalent – Can effectively communicate and is competent in reading and writing skills.
